My wife and I are getting a uncontested divorce in Texas. We have one child and I am a fireman working a 24 hour on 48 off schedule. We have been separated for 2 months and have worked very well sharing custody and expenses for our son. She told me we are not required to have a custody aggreement and she is very happy with the way we are handling custody. Is this legal? We do not want to throw what little money we have to the lawyers.

It is certainly legal, but may be illadvised. If a dispute arises in the future, you may have to modify the court order.

Some judges are very reluctant to approve a divorce decree that does not include custody and visitation terms.

Here’s a little info. My husbands daughter wants to come live with us half of the time, so we thought we’d do joint legal custody. her mom is okay with this. Is there anyway to do this without all the cost of a lawyer? Any forms that can be downloaded to do ourselves? Or is a lawyer the only way and how much is that gonna put us back?
Oh and they were never married, so he doesnt really have any legal rights as of now.

You may be able to contact an attorney by phone and ask this question. If all parties agree and it is put in writing and signed, why would it be an issue that couldn’t be worked out between both of you easily.

I am a 17 year old living in Arizona, and we (my counselor and social I) are trying to get my mother to sign a power of attorney form to give a family friend temporary custody over me until I turn 18 in two months.
It’s just really important that she can’t randomly change her mind on it.
And I can’t pay for it–most of the forms I have found are for sale!
Any tips would be of great help; time is of the essence.
