My daughters father left us over a month ago, he’s close to 400 miles away.

He wants to have joint custody of our child, but I think I read something that said the other parent must live within 100/200 miles away.

If it makes any difference, she is 1 1/2 years old.

Since there isnt a court order, he can move that far. Typically, when a court order is set, the distance and process of moving would be addressed. The standard miles away are 30 minutes, 100 miles, 200 miles, 500 miles depending on the reasons for the move.

Since the child is only 18 months, long times away from the primary caregiver arent recommended.
Since he left you guys, you would become th primary residential parent, and he would most likely be awarded visiation.

being as how hes so far away, joint custody isnt likely at this age. But would be possible when the child is older.
Joint custody works best when the parents live in close proximity to one another and are able to get long without problems. If both of those facotors arent present, joint custody usually isnt an option because it just causes problems.

The typical visiation for an 18 month old, is 1 overnight, and two 8-10 hour visits.

This is an awareness video to the issue of Parental Abductions.
Always is not forever, relationships break down. If the break down is nasty and one of high conflict, there is a high probability that children born of the relationship will become a pawn in an awful game of power and sheer spitefulness.
In extreme cases, either one of the parents could abduct the child, taking the child out of their homeland and away from everything they have ever known and loved.
