If you’ve dealt with a parent custody case in your own life, because of a divorce or other reasons, you know that some attorneys will guide you, and that others may try to push you more outside of your comfort zone. Sometimes the pushing can be a good thing for a meek person who is not standing up for themselves or their rights, but other times, lawyers can try pushing you into going for more that they know will be disputed in hopes of being able to keep billing you for more hours on your parent custody case.
As you can see from the following clipping from the UK, this isn’t just related to things happening in the us:
f/k/a . . . » UK Dads Angrily Protest Divorce Lawyers - Claiming that divorce lawyers pour petrol on the flames of divorcing couples, and deprive children of the care of their fathers, members of the group Fathers 4 Justice have been staging dramatic protests in the United Kingdom. Fifteen fathers wearing white contamination outfits stormed the offices of Parker Bird solicitors in Queen Street, Huddersfield with sirens blaring, whistles blowing and flags waving. So what is the solution? Lawyers do have to tell us what are options are and try to guide us towards what best for us. But how do we tell when that’s crossing the line into just being greedy on their end?
This, like most situations involving parent custody issues, is not an easy one to resolve. You do need to make a judgment on your own as to what is going to be in your own best interests. If a lawyer is trying to talk you into something and you aren’t sure if you should go down that road or not, talk to a close friend or family member before committing to anything. Remember this is your choice and your life.
Above all though, try to remember that chances are pretty good that the lawyer is trying to help you in the best way they know how, more litigation. Yes this is their livelihood and some seem to think it is the only way to resolve any dispute, but in the end this is your money that they will be paid to resolve the dispute for you, and you need to make sure that you really want to dispute this parent custody matter, and that it isn’t just because some lawyer talked you into it.
