(Bac Giang province, Vietnam, 25 july-2010) Tens of thousands of angry Vietnamese besieged a communist government building, threw rocks and blocked traffic protest and parade with a coffin containing the body of a man (Nguyen Van Khuong) who died after being detained for a routine traffic violation, a newspaper reported Tuesday. Communist police in Vietnam’s northeastern province of Bac Giang used tear gas and batons to break up a protest. Witnesses who asked not to be named said an unknown number of people were injured, while others were seen being taken into custody. One witness said protesters had set fire to several police cars. “On Sunday afternoon, there were too many people in the march to Bac Giang Province People’s Committee headquarters. The crowd was so dense it was difficult to move,” said one woman who asked not to be identified. Any type of protest is extremely rare in Communist-ruled Vietnam, where all forms of dissent are quickly, brutally quashed.
The victim’s uncle, Nguyen Van Toan, as saying that family members gathered to demand an investigation into the 21-year-old man’s death in northern Bac Giang province. He was hospitalized after being taken into custody following a routine traffic stop. His girlfriend, who was with him at the time of arrest, was informed an hour and a half later that he was dead.
Unhappy with the failure by police to explain his death, the family and thousands of villagers placed his coffin in front of the provincial communist government “people’s committee” building. The protesters then grew angry, bringing down the gate and parts of an iron fence surrounding the communist government compound, while pelting police with rocks.
