anyone ever filed for visitation/custody and represented themselves?
we really just dont have the money to get a family court lawyer and my bf has been completly cut out of his son’s life. he pays his child support, his child’s mother was quick to get that filed, but he doesnt even have a contact number to reach her. our state gives absolutly no rights to fathers until they get custody established in the courts, so i was wondering if anyone has ever done it without a lawyer, about their experience and the outcome.

Trust me in the fact I have experienced this with my son and his drama…you must use a lawyer for visitation. The judge will not entertain a person walking into court and trying to establish visitation.
Remember visitation and child support are separate issues within the court system. The ex established the child support now the dad establishes – through a family law lawyer visitation rights.
She automatically has custody but the dad can have his lawyer request joint custody. Even if you have to sell some stuff or borrow the money you ever want to see that child he must get a lawyer. Otherwise he’s paying her a monthly amount for – well nothing on his end.
Advice for you: Keep in mind your probably thinking about marrying him. When you marry him you get a package deal. You marry him along with the ex wife and kids and his family – they all come with him. So decide in your own mind if you want this the rest of your life. Get on the pill yourself so as not to really complicate this thing. He’s gonna be an expensive bf.

my kids’ dad has two other children from a previous relationship. they had things all worked out between themselves until she got engaged to someone else and decided to try and cut him outta their kids’ lives. he took her to court for custody/visitation representing himself and she got a lawyer (she makes a whole lot more than he does!). it has been over 2 years and things still aren’t settled. since she has a lawyer and he doesn’t, they do everything they can to postpone/delay the final judgment and he has been ordered to do all kinds of counseling/mediation whatever she wants and it costs HIM money! the worst part is, all he is asking for is twice a month weekend visitation (we live in cali, she lives in nevada) and the mediator has even agreed he should get what he wants but the judge still awarded SUPERVISED visits in NEVADA! he is doing everything he can just to be a part of his kids’ lives but he just isn’t getting anywhere and i firmly believe it is because he doesn’t have a lawyer and she does.
